Teaware

“If it is our ideal to live in a world surrounded by beautiful things, then we must raise the ordinary things of our daily lives to a higher level.”  Soetsu Yanagi - The Beauty of Everyday Things

Tea began as a medicine and grew into a beverage. The fifteenth century saw Japan ennoble it into a religion of aestheticism - Teaism.

Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among everyday existence. To gain a deeper appreciation of beauty, it is necessary for the everyday objects to also be beautiful. Thus, the tea bowl from its practical use, also represents the intersection of culture, history and ritual.

In my interpretation, through a creative exploration, I investigated it by both removing and reinforcing its functionality.

Stone & Earth Guinomi and Chawan

The history of ceramics as a medium is profoundly intertwined with daily life, spanning cultures, civilizations, and millennia. It is a medium with innate tactility – soft and malleable for the maker, tough and long-lasting for the user who may end up holding or drinking from a tea bowl. It can bridge a gap between internal thought and external function, between now and ancient geology.

These reflections have inspired me to create this series of teaware. Through these cups, I intend to connect my creativity and ready to use objects, to celebrate natural materials such as wild stones and soils into crafted items with a function but not necessarily of utilitarian value.
